Hurricane Beryl Precaution, Impact and Records in Atlantic Basin

Hurricane Beryl, currently(8 July) inland over Arkansas, is an active tropical cyclone and the second named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. It is notable for being the earliest-forming Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record within any calendar year.

Hurricane Beryl formed on June 28 in the Main Development Region and rapidly intensified as it moved west through the central tropical Atlantic.

After making landfall on Carriacou, Grenada as a Category 4 hurricane on July 1, it continued to intensify, becoming a Category 5 hurricane before weakening and making subsequent landfalls in Tulum, Quintana Roo, and Matagorda, Texas.

Impact and Damage by Hurricane Beryl

Beryl caused extensive damage across several regions:

1. Grenada: Extensive damage on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and other islands in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
2. Venezuela: Three fatalities, with several missing.
3. United States: Eight fatalities and widespread damage, especially in Texas.
Overall Damage: More than US$5 billion in preliminary damage estimates caused by Hurricane Beryl

Meteorological History of Hurricane Beryl

Beryl began as a tropical wave off the coast of West Africa on June 25, quickly developing into a tropical depression on June 28. It strengthened into Tropical Storm Beryl and then into a hurricane by June 29, undergoing rapid intensification.

Beryl made its first landfall in Carriacou, Grenada, as a high-end Category 4 hurricane. It reached Category 5 status on July 2, peaking with winds of 165 mph and a pressure of 934 mb.

The storm weakened and fluctuated in strength before making landfall in Tulum, Quintana Roo, as a Category 2 hurricane, later re-entering the Gulf of Mexico and making its final landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane.

Preparations and Responses for the Storm

Various regions implemented precautionary measures due to Hurricane Beryl risk:

1. Lesser Antilles: Multiple islands, including Barbados and Grenada, were placed under hurricane warnings. States of emergency were declared, and shelters were opened.
2. Greater Antilles: Jamaica and the Dominican Republic issued warnings and took measures such as curfews and airport closures.
3. Mexico and Belize: Quintana Roo and other areas activated shelters and mobilized resources.
4. United States: Texas issued severe weather disaster declarations and evacuation orders, and FEMA activated its National Response Coordination Center.

Records and Notable Achievements of Beryl

Beryl set several records:
– Earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane within a calendar year.
– Strongest June hurricane by wind speed.
– First tropical system to undergo rapid intensification in the Main Development Region during June.

Hurricane Beryl’s rapid intensification from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in 42 hours is unprecedented for storms earlier than September. Analysis suggests that climate change may have strengthened Beryl’s winds and precipitation, though natural climate variability also played a role.
